Welcome to Heart-Brain Coherence
What if we were able to choose our responses better? If we had a higher tendency to compassionate action? Were more loving to those we care about?
If it all came down to a simple connection?
A practice using our brain and body, that could be trained, and instilled as the default?
We would have the basis of heart-brain coherence, the beginning of a pathway of realising that we experience life through a combination of our hearts intelligence, and our brains intelligence.
We have specific experiences based on the similarity of their wave patterns, and when these patterns match up, we experience a sense of calm, allowing us to experience naturally elevated emotions.
Simply, when our heart and brain are coherent, we get to be more present. Stressors aren’t such a problem, and we get to be ready for whatever is thrown at us.
What Is Heart Coherence? (And Why It Matters)
Heart Coherence is when our heart's rhythms are steady and balanced, we feel centred and calm. Our actions are calmer and more peaceful, allowing us to make better decisions. Which in turn provides us easier opportunities moving forward.
We keep moving forward, beginning to gain momentum, and removing obstacles. A reason for this is the heart isn’t just a muscle - it sends signals to the brain, influencing emotions and even how you think. Naturally, when you achieve heart coherence, it’s like turning the dial to tune into your calmest self, reducing stress and finding inner peace.
Key benefits of heart brain coherence include, but are not limited to:
- More emotional stability
- Less stress and anxiety
- Greater mental clarity
Heart-Brain Coherence: How the Heart and Brain Work Together
When these signals of the brain and heart sync up, they are sent and received at equal rates, forming a harmony. We have glimpses of this throughout the day, moments of inspiration when these patterns temporarily align. However, when this occurs for extended periods, true brain-heart coherence is formed, and naturally, the effects are sustained.
This has immense benefits as your mind becomes calm, works more efficiently, and focuses more clearly and deeply.
When your heart and brain sync, a wave of coherence is created, which washes away stress and worry, leaving you in a state of flow.
Heart-brain communication is built upon the predicate that the heart sends signals to the brain, influencing emotions and cognitive functions, and when these signals are in harmony we feel more aligned with ourselves and the world.
Allowing us to demonstrate sharper decision-making, enhanced focus, and productivity, and feel more grounded and less reactive.
Brain Coherence: The Mental Reset You Need
Our brain is a phenomenal piece of equipment, but much like your computer, if the components aren’t communicating correctly, everything grinds to an annoying halt. So when all these parts of the brain work together coherently, we experience them synchronized and harmoniously, which lets us think clearly and feel calm.
The fog lifts, as we are freed back into our present moment. Achieving brain coherence feels like breaking through the mist - suddenly, everything comes into focus, and your mind can rest.
This leads to significant effects on our stress levels, as our mind is less reactive, and our body is better equipped to remove stress hormones. We mitigate our likelihood of experiencing more stress while helping our body release that which is currently stressing it.
How to Achieve Heart-Brain Coherence: Simple Daily Techniques
As simple as breathing. With all the information popping up and reminding us to breathe, it really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise we kick-start this system with breath. Place your palms gently over your heart and breathe into that area allowing the chest to rise and fall. Consciously elongate the breath allowing it to take up more space and time. As you breathe, imagine there is a brilliant source of light and power at the center of your heart. Notice how you felt before the exercise and now? With just a few deep breaths, you can invite brain-heart coherence into your life and watch the stress melt away. Allowing you to make different choices and get to action different plans, in a way that continues to invite more ease into your life, and others.
This serves as a great time to practice gratitude, much like any time, inviting more acceptance and love. Getting to be more wholly in the space we are the ones championing our own development. Recognising difficulties in life, as challenges to be overcome. Moving through in our own way.
Interestingly surpassing these challenges is largely linked to how we move, the mindfulness we are able to maintain, and the ease in our system. So including and making use of mindful movement, like tai chi, yoga or qi gong, provide a basis for us to move with greater ease and grace.
The Science Behind Heart-Brain Coherence
“When we're stressed or experiencing negative emotions, the heart's erratic and disordered rhythm sends signals to the brain that impair higher cognitive functions. This reduces our ability to think clearly, remember, learn, and make sound decisions, which is why we often react impulsively under stress. Additionally, these heart signals can amplify the emotional experience, reinforcing the feelings of stress.” (Heart Math Institute)
“On the other hand, when the heart sends more ordered and stable signals during positive emotional states, it enhances cognitive function and promotes emotional stability. By cultivating heart rhythm coherence through positive emotions, we not only improve overall body function but also profoundly influence how we think, feel, perceive, and perform in our daily lives.” (Heart Math Institute)
“When we feel emotions like appreciation, joy, care, and love, our heart rhythm becomes highly ordered, resembling a smooth and harmonious wave. This is known as a coherent heart rhythm. In this state, the two branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are synchronized, and the body’s systems function with greater efficiency and harmony. It's no surprise that positive emotions feel so good—they actually help our body’s systems work together more smoothly.” (Heart Math Institute)
Heart-Brain Coherence in Your Daily Life
So now that we now about this connection, the true trick comes in habituating ourselves into this state, naturally. To create a routine and rhythm in ourself, that sets us up to effortless exist in this state, and gravitate more deeply into it. The easiest way to achieve this to let it form a part of your daily routine.
Begin your day with the heart centred breath, allowing yourself to come back to it whenever you recall, and remembering to allow yourself grace when you forget. Support this with a gratitude practice on your commute or at lunch. Perhaps the best time to practice gratitude is when you are deeply triggered, finding gratitude for the trigger, and your own experience in that time.
Returning to these practices during difficult times allows you to centre within yourself, your life, and your experience.
